SBTi

Fernando Villasana, the former Head of Sector Development at the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), will leverage his extensive expertise as Senior Advisor at Sustainserv

Sustainserv, a global management consulting firm that assists clients in developing and executing on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies and programs, today announced that Fernando Villasana, the former Head of Sector Development at the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), will join the team as a Senior Advisor. In his new role, Villasana will provide expert support to Sustainserv’s U.S. and European-based teams as they guide clients to set science-based greenhouse gas targets.

“Science-based greenhouse gas targets are the gold standard for corporate greenhouse gas management and target setting,” said Dr. Matthew Gardner, Managing Partner for Sustainserv in the U.S. “While our team has successfully supported dozens of companies in their greenhouse gas reduction pathways, when we had the opportunity to bring in someone with Fernando’s experience and credibility in the space, we jumped at it. He brings great experience in the methodologies in both target setting, but also reduction pathways – insights that are so important to our clients.”

With over 20 years of experience in environmental and climate-related fields and a deep specialization in greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and science-based targets, Villasana brings extensive expertise in corporate sustainability to his new role at Sustainserv. He spent eight years at the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), where he played a pivotal role in shaping corporate decarbonization strategies. As Corporate Decarbonization Research Lead, he coordinated research to define effective emission reduction strategies and substantiate corporate climate claims. In his prior roles as Head of Sectoral Development and Technical Team Lead, he spearheaded the development of sector-specific standards, methodologies, and other technical resources, directly influencing global best practices.

Beyond his technical expertise, he has worked extensively across the climate ecosystem, collaborating with governments, multilateral organizations, multinational corporations, and leading civil society organizations to drive ambitious climate action. His background also includes air quality and carbon consulting, GHG auditing, and policy analysis across climate, cleantech and renewables. He holds an industrial engineering degree and a Master’s in Environmental Management.

“This is a great next step for me personally and professionally,” said Mr. Villasana. “To be able to bring my years of experience in greenhouse gas accounting, and particularly with the science-based targets program to a global team like Sustainserv is a great opportunity. Their international client-base and openness to new ideas and innovation is really exciting.”

Based out of Sustainserv’s Boston office, Mr. Villasana will support the consulting firm’s global greenhouse gas accounting and goal setting services in a global capacity.
