MetaMetrics®, developer of the Lexile® Framework for Reading, and Amira Learning (Amira), the leader in accelerating reading outcomes with AI and the science of reading, have expanded their partnership to integrate the Lexile® Framework for Oral Reading into Amira’s assessment. This collaboration enhances the accuracy of fluency measurement, providing school districts with deeper insights proven to accelerate literary growth.
The Amira solution utilizes AI to combine Lexile with observational curriculum-based measurement and in-assessment adaptivity. Together, this delivers precise evaluations of reading proficiency capturing and analyzing every word to deliver hyper-focused insights for teachers.
Rooted in over thirty years of research, Amira powers instructional coherence by connecting assessment, supplemental instruction, and tutoring to a school district’s chosen curriculum through the science of reading framework and is trusted by millions of students and educators worldwide.
“School districts no longer have a choice of losing instructional time so that teachers can do observational assessment or coping with inequity and inaccuracy because digital tests do not observe actual reading,” said Mark Angel, CEO of Amira Learning, “With Lexile built-in, we have the highest psychometric ratings and deep alignment to the science of reading, maintaining Amira ISIP Assess as a better way to screen, benchmark, and progress monitor.”
The Lexile Framework for Oral Reading offers a scientific approach to measuring reading fluency, including both the students’ reading abilities and the readability of text on the same scale, increasing accuracy over the more traditional “words correct per minute” (WCPM) method. These innovations enable educators to:
- Create actionable narratives: Lexile oral reading measures include analysis of speed and accuracy, as well as diagnostics that help teachers inform instruction and monitor progress in real-time.
- Communicate objective measures: Integrating oral readability of test passages ensures that assessments are calibrated to accurately measure students’ reading capabilities.
- Eliminate guesswork: AI-driven automation minimizes bias, offering consistent, reliable measures for diverse student populations, including English Language Learners and struggling readers.
“Reading doesn’t come naturally to the brain. To accelerate reading growth requires us to augment every step of the learning and instruction process. We are supplementing results with built-in objective measures using Lexile,” said Brad Baumgartner, CEO of MetaMetrics. “We are excited to work closely with Amira–fluency is often an overlooked literacy skill, yet it is key to determining whether a student is a skilled reader. Together, we’re creating actionable narratives that provide context for educators to raise strong readers.”
Amira has a proven impact on literacy outcomes and has earned the highest ratings from both the Deal Center for Literacy and the National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII) among all academic assessment tools. This proven effectiveness has led to Amira’s approval by nearly every state Department of Education, including California, where Amira stands as the only unanimously approved screener for reading risk.
Amira’s integration with the Lexile Framework for Oral Reading is available for pilot projects now and is expected to be generally available for use in the 2025-2026 school year.
