DET-IX Enhances Infrastructure with Arista 7060X5 Series Switches

DET-iX upgrades with Arista 7060X5 switches.

The Detroit Internet Exchange (DET-iX), Michigan’s largest not-for-profit internet exchange, is proud to announce a major infrastructure upgrade featuring Arista Networks’ state-of-the-art 7060X5 series switches. This investment marks a key step in DET-iX’s ongoing mission to deliver high-speed, low-latency interconnection services to its expanding member community.

“Arista Networks’ leading-edge technology and expertise will significantly enhance the Detroit Internet Exchange, strengthening Michigan’s internet backbone and contributing to the growth of the digital economy,” said Ryan Duda, CTO of 123NET. “The Detroit Internet Exchange is unique as an open-access, carrier-neutral and fee-free exchange—an approach that has attracted major internet players including Apple, Microsoft and Google. Our partnership with Arista ensures that the exchange is well-positioned to meet growing demands for years to come.”

DET-iX recently surpassed 2.5 terabits per second of peak traffic for the first time—highlighting the increasing need for robust, scalable infrastructure to support the state’s digital ecosystem.

As part of the upgrade, DET-iX has integrated two Arista 7060DX5-32 switches into its core infrastructure. Key features include:

  • 32 x 400GbE QSFP-DD ports
  • 12.8 Tbps of wire-speed throughput
  • Latency as low as 825 nanoseconds
  • 57 MB shared packet buffer

These switches also support flexible breakout configurations, allowing for up to 128 x 100GbE ports per device. With this enhancement, DET-iX now delivers a total switching capacity of 25.6 Tbps, ensuring ample headroom for traffic growth with enhanced scalability, reliability, improved network resilience, and better member connectivity options.

“We were able to complete this installation with zero disruption to DET-iX service,” Duda said. “The smooth implementation was achieved through strong partnership with the Arista team, with Cal Cook providing helpful support during the initial configuration phase.”

Internet exchange points are facilities where networks connect to exchange traffic with each other. These exchanges use switching equipment to facilitate efficient peering between members and optimize network performance. DET-iX, one of the largest internet exchanges globally, is housed at 123NET’s Southfield headquarters, which serves as Michigan’s best connected data center facility.
