Braille Institute Welcomes Esteemed Legal Executive Effie Silva To BOD

Global Corporate Counsel and Nonprofit Leader Joins Board to Help Propel Growth and Innovation Agenda

Braille Institute of America proudly announces the appointment of Effie D. Silva, General Counsel of Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc., to its Board of Directors. A nationally recognized legal executive and civic leader, Ms. Silva brings deep expertise in corporate governance, risk management, and social impact to help guide Braille Institute’s bold growth initiatives.

With over two decades of global leadership at Fortune 500 and multinational companies including Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc., Cargill, and Tyson Foods, Ms. Silva’s experience spans legal, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disciplines. Her professional acumen is complemented by a deep personal alignment with Braille Institute’s mission — her grandmother experienced vision loss later in life, shaping Ms. Silva’s lifelong dedication to expanding access and dignity for people who are blind or visually impaired.

“We are honored to welcome Effie to our Board,” said Jim (Dimitri) Kales, CEO of Braille Institute. “She brings not only deep legal and operational knowledge but also a profound connection to our mission that will resonate with the communities we serve.”

Braille Institute’s recently launched strategic vision, Mission Magnified, outlines a plan to grow its reach tenfold through expanded programming, emerging technologies, and dynamic partnerships. Ms. Silva’s leadership will be vital in shaping this ambitious expansion.

Jim Rhodes, Chair of the Board, added: “Effie brings tremendous insight as both a legal strategist and a purpose-driven board leader. Her guidance will be instrumental as we amplify our impact to serve over 200,000 individuals annually.”

Ms. Silva currently serves on several nonprofit and professional boards, including the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Foundation, America On Tech, and the University of Florida Law School Board of Trustees. She is NACD Directorship Certified and an active member of the Latino Corporate Directors Association.

“As Chair of the Governance Committee, I’ve had the privilege of leading Effie’s nomination,” said Michael Corley, Governance Committee Chair. “Her warmth, strategic insight, enthusiasm, and collaborative spirit were evident throughout our conversations. She exemplifies the kind of leader who brings both heart and vision to the boardroom, and we are thrilled to welcome her.”
