Great River Connections Academy Opens 2025–26 with New Learning Paths

Ohio tuition-free virtual public school launches new alternative program and celebrates strong family satisfaction

Great River Connections Academy, a tuition-free, online public school for students in grades K-12 across Ohio has started its eighth year of operation. With flexible learning options, engaging coursework, and personalized support, the school continues to empower students and families across Ohio – and this year, it’s introducing even more ways to help students thrive.

Among the school’s offerings this year is an alternative school program for students between the ages of 16 and 21 in grades 7-12 who are at least one grade level behind or have experienced significant academic challenges that prevent them from continuing with traditional school. The alternative school program offers a flexible and supportive environment with an adaptive curriculum that allows students to meet graduation requirements without retaking material they’ve already mastered.

“At Great River Connections Academy, we’re dedicated to serving a wide variety of students with different needs to gain the skills necessary to thrive in the modern world,” said Jason Swinehart, Great River Connections Academy school leader. “The alternative program gives select students the chance to focus on five to six courses each day or flexible block coursework to complete fewer courses more quickly. It includes individualized instruction, and progression plans to meet the unique needs of every student.”

Great River Connections Academy provides students advanced courses, engaging extracurricular activities and flexible scheduling, empowering them to take charge of their unique educational journeys. Middle and high schoolers can also take advantage of the school’s impressive College and Early Career Readiness offering that integrates traditional academics with career-focused courses in fields such as IT, business, health sciences and marketing. This program equips students with durable skills like leadership, critical thinking and teamwork. Students can participate in career exploration and industry networking opportunities to build confidence, make connections and find direction to prepare for their future.

Learning in a virtual classroom suits a variety of students because it recognizes that each student is unique. Those who attend Great River Connections Academy come from different backgrounds and choose full-time online school for various reasons. Some students prefer to take ownership of their education and benefit from the flexibility that virtual school offers, while others are looking for a consistent, safe learning environment.

Anna Kear, a sophomore at Great River Connections Academy, speaks very highly about her experience.

“Connections Academy accommodates my activities while providing a wonderful environment with fantastic teachers,” she said. “This program functions like a brick-and-mortar school, with peer interaction, field trips, and engaging class lectures, which definitely helps me to learn.”

Students are returning to school following the release of the 2025 Parent Satisfaction Survey, an annual third-party survey that provides families with the opportunity to review their experience with Great River Connections Academy. According to the 2025 Parent Satisfaction Survey results:
