National Society of Black Engineers Releases Micro Certification Program

National Society

The collaboration is designed to enhance professional development and increase diversity in the field of Artificial Intelligence

The National Society of Black Engineers® (NSBE®), one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the U.S., will provide specialized AI training as part of Microsoft’s Micro Certification Program. Microsoft has worked with NSBE leadership to create a true impact in advancing NBSE’s mission as well as providing a grant to support NSBE’s facilitation of member skilling.

Founded in 1975, NSBE is dedicated to supporting and promoting the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology. With over 600 chapters and more than 24,000 active members in the U.S. and abroad, NSBE’s mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

The collaboration will result in the creation of an exclusive NSBE AI Certification. This certification will be tailored to address specific areas of AI training that are relevant to NSBE members, providing them with a wide range of skills required to be successful in critical job roles. NSBE and Microsoft will identify the key competencies required and structure the certification program accordingly. The Micro Certification Program is designed to provide focused training that enables participants to obtain micro certifications upon passing competency tests. These can be displayed on professional platforms like LinkedIn, allowing students to validate the skills acquired through the program.

“This collaboration not only enhances professional development but also significantly contributes to increasing diversity in the field of Artificial Intelligence,” said Darrell Booker, Corporate Affairs Specialist at Microsoft. “By providing specialized AI training and micro certifications, we are empowering our members with the skills and opportunities needed to excel in critical job roles and drive meaningful change in their communities.”

“NSBE has been creating a legacy of excellence and opportunity for over 50 years, and we are proud to be able to support our members through this new and exciting program,” said NSBE CEO Janeen Uzzell. “By teaming with Microsoft, we will be able to bridge the AI skills gap as we equip our members with the knowledge, credentials, and opportunities to lead in artificial intelligence.”

This exclusive certification program will be offered to all NSBE members upon completion of the specified training and successful passing of the competency test. The certification will serve as a testament to NSBE’s and Microsoft’s commitment to fostering diversity in the field of AI.

“This program is a game changer for students like me looking to advance their technical skills,” said NSBE Collegiate Member Taylor Hill-Miles. “As someone who aspires to enhance technological accessibility, reduce healthcare inequity, and ensure innovations benefit all communities, I look forward to creating solutions that will drive meaningful change.”

AI represents an opportunity to create, build, and shape a future where technology serves humanity in purposeful ways. This collaboration helps increase access to AI training content and learning tools, which will create a lasting impact on numerous communities. Currently, about 82% of leaders say employees will need AI skills, and that number is expected to grow. Through the Microsoft Certification Program, AI-driven opportunities are brought to the forefront, and more diverse voices are not only heard but also empowered to shape the future of technology.
